Ability to enter/scan UPC codes
It takes a long time to enter each title and issue #1. It would be great if ones with UPC could be scanned, say by mobile phone, and added to one's collection.
Use one of the mobile apps.

Bump....any news on this??!!

Yeah...thus far the scanner apps don't support scanning EAN13+5 UPCs at least that I have found. They will scan the Series but not the issue.

Any update on including the scan UPC feature in the app?

Thanks for all the thought dedicated to this idea.

Oh. But I was thinking, because their app essentially scans the barcode, and then emulates a keyboard to send the codes to the PC/MAC as if it was entered via a keyboard, it would really work with any app or site that accepts input via the keyboard, right ? So if comicbookrealm accepts barcode input via the keyboard, it should work with this app, even though it's not your app ? Oh, well, just thinking. Thanks for the great site !

Yeah...that is a native app they made to work alongside their site. Again, if we had the money we could do it as well...

I made a mistake too, sorry. I should have pointed you to this instead:
CLZ Barry, a barcode scanner app for iPhone, iPad and Android. It lets you scan barcodes using the built-in camera of your iPhone, iPad or Android device. Supports UPC, EAN, ISBN, UPC+5 barcodes and QR codes. Instantly transmit scanned barcodes to your desktop computer (PC or Mac). Barcodes are entered into any program, any textbox on your PC or Mac, as if you entered the digits using your keyboard.
So you can scan the codes using your mobile, and then send them to your PC/Mac as if it was entered via the keyboard.
More info at: http://www.clz.com/barry/

Sorry...I should have prefaced that if we had a true native app we could do it. We however do not have thousands of dollars to create a native app and as such we are forced to rely on external scanning apps that would integrate with our "app"...

I know of at least one app that can scan comic barcodes correctly (at least claims to, in combination with their software at least, I havent actually verified it myself): CLZ Comics.
It's available for iPad/iPhone/iPod and Android.More information is available here: http://www.clz.com/comics/

The problem is apparently right now none of the scanners (for phones) scans 2 barcodes. Even though a comic's UPC looks like one, it is technically a 13+5. They scan one or the other. I have been in discussions with scan.me for over a year to see if they would support it, but nothing yet...

I Agree With John Smith 100% about the Barcode adding for comic books on here.

I would definitely love to have such a feature. I have the barcodes of my entire comic collection: being able to add them using the barcode would really make adding all of my comics so much easier.

I think that auto-populating the fields with the scanned comic's information is overkill. If I wanted to scan a bunch of comics of mixed dates and values, it would make much more sense to either:
1. Take me to the "add to my collection" screen for that issue, with no auto-population.
eg: Scan Catwoman vol 4 #13 where I would be able to enter my own paid price, comment, etc..Or at the very least....
2. Take me straight to the indexed issue information (to save time in typing the name, browsing the list, tabbing through the page numbers, etc) eg: Take me straight to Amazing Spider-Man #300 without the typing and additional 3-ish clicks. -

Yeah Puinno thats what I was trying to say BUT apparently I worded it wrong lol

Well, I would never make it where you can scan a comic to add it to your collection. I would make it where it scans and takes you to the comic where you can do with it as you please...but no automated addition.

I think what James was getting at was, if you scanned a book, that it would scan in and be added to your collection at cover price and you would not be given the option of changing the price paid? But I assume if we incorporate this UPC scanning that you are still given the option of putting down how much you paid for it (including percentages). If that kind of what you meant James? Even so, if a book is added to your collection you can still change the price paid column and add in your percentages/prices.
-
James your comment is irrelevant to the topic. But to answer your question, at the top of the add to collection page it tells you how: "You can now enter a % in the Price Paid header to take a fixed % off each price."
So in the price paid box, just enter 20% and hit the down arrow and it will take 20% off of all of the prices.

I get MOST of my books at a 20% OFF at my local comic shop for my "Pull List" there. How could you incoporate the percentage? If a book is 3.99 I pay 2.79 & if a book is 2.99 I pay 2.09 per issue.

I have researched it and there are 2 "possibilities"
1. Use the web scan method from zxing. The current problem is they do not return the issue, only the series. I have contacted the developer and he said he could return the issue, but it is not high on his priority list. Also it would only work on Android as the iOS port is different (would have to convince them too).
2. Take the source for the zxing app and incorporate it into a native CBR.com app for both iOS and Android.
So #1 is possible, I doubt #2 would happen as it would cost thousands of dollars to build a native app for devices. I am already pretty close to having an "app" for CBR.com and other than my time it won't cost anything.

Many newsstand editions have UPCs, and there are offline platforms that permit scanning of inventory.
